Frequently Asked Questions

What is currently available on the site?

The 21st Century Glaze Project is a work in progress and always will be. Members have sent suggestions for new features and there are many more glazes, slips, Clay bodies and articles to add to the site. 545 Glaze recipes have been included. Of those, 226 have been tested and the test tiles uploaded to the site. Depending on volunteer support and the interns that have contributed their time we expect to add over 200 recipes each year. As recipes are contributed by our members (you) each glaze will be tested and uploaded to the site.

Our goal is to have a thousand cross referenced recopies available. Late 2008 and 2009 will bring a wealth of ceramics literature, tools and surface tweaks. The articles are being contributed by ceramic material and tools manufacturers throughout the world. Now, Paragon Industries has contributed articles on kiln firing, maintenance, etc. Visit again soon and you will see more useful articles.

How can I contribute Recipes and Article?

To contribute, first you need to register as a member. Membership is FREE. Once you have logged in, you can navigate to the "Contribute Recipes or Article page. The registered members of The 21st Century Glaze Project will be notified about four times a year by email when new recipes and articles are added or updated. These newsletters will also contain ceramics tips and notice of additional features.

Why do I need to register to download recipes and articles?

When members login to the site, we are able to collect summary information on the number of users that visit the site. Our records do not contain your user email, name or any other personal information. The statics are tabulated to show our funders (Foundations, Corporations and Advertisers) that their contributions are worthwhile. It lets them know how successful that their contributions were in support of the ceramic community. Absolutely none of your information will be shared with any person or organization. Never! There is one exception to our privacy pledge. We offer to promote you and your organization by including a link to your site when a member views or downloads a recipe from us. That is only done if you want us to include a link to your site. Still, your email address will not be released.

How much does it cost to register and become a member?

The membership registration is absolutely free of charge. While your donations are needed and greatly appreciated, they are not required. Who is Glaze21?

In January of 2008 we began work on “The 21st Century Glaze Project”. It is a combined effort of members of the ceramic community. The web site supports a community of common interest (Ceramic Arts) to meet and interact as if they were in the same room. The Project is viewed as an ongoing one with ideas, contributions and support of thousands of artists, schools and companies. Our nonprofit (501c3) group is “Glaze21”. We are in the process of creating a web site that will contain more than 1,000 glazes (both recipes and commercial glazes) and ceramic reference material. The recipes are contributed by art centers, colleges, universities and ceramic artists. The commercial glaze samples are being contributed by the quality glaze manufacturing companies. Our goal is to create a comprehensive source of available to the ceramic artist on the web. The web site is provided at no cost to schools, art centers and artists. In exchange for the contribution of glaze recipe or commercial glaze samples we promote the contributor a promotional statement on the site. When a glaze is viewed or printed, the contributor’s name, promotional statement and web site is prominently displayed. This win-win model helps the artist, the contributor and the Project; in short, the entire ceramic community benefits. The web site targets ceramic artists that want good, tested glazes but who do not have or want a Ph.D. in chemistry. By offering access to schools, art centers and ceramicists at no cost, we expect to have over 100,000 visitors to the web site each year. Along with a large set of glazes the site includes easy to use search tools that make it easy to find the desired glaze.

Once fully implemented the site will contain:

  • More than 1,000 glaze recipes and commercial glazes
  • Easy to use cross reference searches
  • A set of ceramic resource links
  • A glaze batch calculator/glaze batch printer
  • Useful Ceramic reference material

We hope that you will participate in the expansion and improvement of the web site. We need you to contribute glaze recipes, reference materials, useful links and monetary support.

In exchange for your contributions we will:

  • List you as the contributor
  • Display a link to your web site
  • Feature you as a contributor and a participant in the Project.
